Genesis 3: 17-19
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread
In Genesis 3: 17-19『And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; n the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was 』
Land and fields are
different. A field is a land that has been cleared for farming. In 3:23, 『Therefore
the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from
whence he was taken. 』The ground is changed to become a
field, and the land and the field are likened to the heart. Adama is a land,
not a field. The land (adama) is well cultivated and becomes a field. The place
where thorn bushes and thistles come out is the land, and the place where
vegetables come out is the field. Since the dust (apar) is mixed with water, it
becomes the ground (mud: Adama) and it is Adam who made this mud into a human
shape. Water symbolizes the word of God.
『And he said,
Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I
commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman
whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 』(Genesis 3: 11-12)
Adam would have described "the situation the wife had spoken to." The
woman (angels) said to her husband (Christ), "I think I can be like God
after hearing Satan's words and trying to leave God." So the man (Christ)
ate the fruit that the woman gave. Eating fruit does not deceive Satan like a
woman, but the husband (Christ) takes his wife (spirits) into this world
because the spirits must enter the world. To enter this world is to become a
body of sin. If Adam had eaten and sinned in the Garden of Eden, he could not
be a symbol of Christ. The representation of Christ has the meaning of bearing
the sin. By entering the world from the kingdom of God, the earth itself
becomes a curse. So the ground produces thorn bushes and thistles.
The thorn bush and
thistle represent God's judgment. In Judges 8: 7, 『And
Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into
mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and
with briers. And in Judges 8:16 『And he took the elders
of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught
the men of Succoth. 』
Hosea 10: 8 has the
same expression. It is the judgment of God that has left God and entered the
earth. And it is also a judgment on trying to fulfill his righteousness without
God on earth. In other words, there will be God's judgment for those who want
to keep the law well and achieve righteousness. God judges the world by the
Word. The Word is Jesus Christ. Soon, Jesus Christ came to this world to judge.
『Thorns also
and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the
field; In
the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground;
for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou
return. 』(Genesis 3: 18-19) It means eating vegetables in the fields until God
judges them. In other words, until they give out thorn bushes and thistles,
they will eat the vegetables in the field. After the judgment passed, God in
Genesis 9: 3-4 allowed us to eat meat.
For sweating on the
face, it means that sweat flows. That is, it represents the nose. Sweating on
your face can be thought of as working hard and sweating, but it symbolizes
your nose here. In Genesis 2: 7, God breathes life into the nose, and in
Genesis 7:22, it is said that in Noah's flood, "the breathing through the
nose" is dead. It means that plants can be eaten only after it flows out
of the nose. The food to eat (Lehem) is rice cake. On the sanctuary, the leper
on the table is Lehem. What God wants to say is, "The earth produces a
thorny bush, so no matter how humans try to do their righteousness, they have
nothing but to be judged." Until then, humans must eat the plants of the
field.
『 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread 』 The thing that God gave (the spirit) from the nose flows out to eat the
bread (law: promise). Humans say they try to fulfill their righteousness, but
eventually die by being judged. The first judgment was Noah's Flood. Forty
days, the windows of the sky opened, pouring water, and all breathing creatures
on the earth died. Noah and the family of seven lived on the Ark. And the
descendants will receive the law of God. It is to eat rice cake. Bread means
the law. It is to keep the law well (to eat the bread) and try to achieve
righteousness.
God chose Abraham,
and when Jacob and the twelve sons went into Egypt, and after 430 years of
slavery, again into Canaan. God gave them the law and found the truth in the
law. God is figuratively explaining this world and the kingdom of God through
Egypt and Canaan. Those who have left the kingdom of God have entered the
world, to find Christ in the Word of God (the law) and come into Christ to
return to the kingdom of God again. The ark is in Christ. Those in this world
do not know that they have left God. The result is God's judgment.
After that judgment,
God will give the bread of life (the Word) for salvation. This bread of life is
hidden in the law. The tree of life is hidden in the tree (the law) of knowing
good and evil. Just as they ate the fruit of the tree in the Garden of Eden to
know good and evil, God gave the law to Israel, the representative of all
peoples, to give them righteousness. So if they realize that they can't achieve
God's righteousness by law, then they should return to God. If they don't come
back, they will be judged at the end.
Noah's Flood was a
judgment on those who tried to fulfill their righteousness when the water above
the window (the word of life) came down from the window. When the water above
the sky (Christ) comes down to the earth, the water under the sky (the law) is
under Christ. Christ is above the law. So those who are under the law are all
judged by Christ. Those who say that they will fulfill their righteousness are
judged by Christ. Those who renounce their righteousness go into Christ, and
those who do not are judged.
『In
the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread』. The
ultimate meaning of this word is that it must flow out of the nose (when the
body of the body dies) to eat, that is, to find life (Christ) in the law and to
wear the body of the spirit. Sweating means that the old man dies, and eating
food means moving on to new life. So it is connected to Romans 6: 4.
『Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 』
In 1 Peter 3: 19-20, “And
hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before
him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth
all things. 』He is Jesus. Noah shouted repentance for
120 years, but those who died in Noah's Ark died without believing what Noah
said. The ark is the only way to live. Jesus died and then went to Hell where
the dead are, telling them that the ark is the Christ and that Christ is the
true bread. It is said that you were judged because you did not believe in the
Ark, because you did not sweat on your face, and because the old man did not
die with Christ.
The same applies to
the living. Those who died with Jesus go up to the kingdom of God with Jesus.
The same is true in the book of Ecclesiastes, "You are the soil, and you will return to the soil." He said that the body returns to the earth, and the spirit goes to God. Soil means temporary dwelling.
